Kate Harrold: Dangerously Whimsical

The title DANGEROULSY WHIMISICAL is inspired by the elements of both light and dark found in Harrold’s work. “I want to create a balance between what’s dark and scary and what’s exciting and joyful. The viewer will notice that when there is a scary or dark element to an image, the subject of the piece is never afraid,” she says. This can be seen in her piece “Wild Child”, where a young girl is unbothered by the dark forest and wild animals that surround her. They join her as she lets out a fearsome howl and embraces the great unknown. This spirit of adventure and fearlessness can be seen often in Harrold’s work.

For the past four years, Mak has been gradually transitioning her style and subject matter, painting more landscapes, and adding natural elements to her cityscapes. This approach can be seen in “Neon Chicago”, featuring Chicago’s iconic skyline contrasted by a vibrant leaf motif that fills the sky. The muted tones of the skyscrapers compliment the bold colors Mak uses in the sky and lake; tiny windows lit with neon lights draw your eye into the buildings themselves.

The second annual “TEN by TEN” exhibition offers something for every kind of visitor. Works by over 300 of Chicago’s emerging and seasoned artists are on full display in “TEN by TEN” at Wicker Park’s Jackson Junge Gallery. Spanning styles, mediums, and themes, the exhibition features over 400 bold and intricate pieces. Guidelines for submissions were limited to only two requirements: each piece must be 10 inches by 10 inches and must be hangable. The result is an enormous variety of work that curbs visual hunger.

Chicago artist Laura Junge says she was taking a lighthearted approach to make a serious point that people need to do a better job protecting the planet. In a new Lake View mural, Laura Junge uses a “skywriting Chicago rat” to help spread word of the need to do better by our climate and environment. Piloting a single-propeller plane bearing the stars of Chicago’s flag, the rodent, wearing goggles in an open cockpit, is spelling out “Save Our Planet” in the sky. Below, a hand holds a globe, two dogs and a rabbit staring at a thermometer with mercury about to burst from the heat.

Best Surrealist Art: Jackson Junge largely revolves around co-owner Laura Lee Junge’s art, which is both surrealist, marked by abstract, free-flowing scenes, and expressionist in nature, but the 3,500 square-foot showroom is also home to several other contemporary artists. There’s Will Armstrong, for instance, who does his drawings with a series of pens and Chinese lettering quills, and Chicago artist Justin Miller, who explores “surreal interpretations of natural landscapes, wildlife, and architecture.” While larger pieces will cost you a pretty penny, the gallery sells its own artist-approved giclee prints in order to bring prices down for those with smaller budgets.
