BELOW THE SURFACE

This concept came to mind after having overlapping conversations with caretakers in my life: the mothers of young children, the career women with elderly parents, the people with sick family members and so on. There was an underlying theme that we should be able to handle everything life throws at us with grace and stability while in reality we feel like we’re drowning in responsibilities. Women are typically the people that become caretakers not only physically but it’s in our biology to also absorb the emotional weight of those around us too. It’s constantly draining us and we have limited resources to help us feel otherwise or even show us that this is happening all around our community. The woman centered in this piece is shown in a white dress to show an illusion of pure perfection, some of what we see being depicted on social media. We are bombarded with these families that seem to be able to manage it all. The woman has all these things weighing her down (flowers and debris on the bottom) that she doesn’t have the capacity to see the beauty of her life as it’s presently unfolding (shown with the floating white daisies above her). There is beauty in the simple moments of our lives and I hope this piece gives women permission to let go of the things that are no longer serving them and the pressures created by others.
