Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a Prussian explorer, geographer, and naturalist. He authored the famous book “Kosmos: Draft of a Physical Description of the World” after traveling extensively through Europe and Latin America. At the tail end of his great Latin American excursion, Humboldt visited America from 1799 to 1804 and described the countries flora and fauna. Humboldt was “a giant of science, whose name and memory have also been endeared to Americans,” reported the Chicago Tribune. On the centennial anniversary of von Humboldt’s birth, celebrated in 1869, Chicago dedicated Humboldt Park in his honor.

“He belonged to two centuries; he studied the science of the eighteenth century, and in ‘Kosmos’ he tried to draw a complete picture of its condition in the middle of the nineteenth century,” wrote the Tribune. “It was at the end of the last century that he resolved on setting out on that celebrated transatlantic journey which has been called the re-discovery of America.”

” wrote the Chicago Tribune in 1933.
